Seeking support is a courageous step. At Oak Counselling, I'm here to provide a safe, understanding space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Catriona Ward

I became a counsellor because I believe in the power of human connection and the capacity for change. It's a privilege to walk alongside clients as they navigate their journeys toward healing and growth.

With a background in education and psychology, my passion has always been supporting people to reach their potential. I’ve worked with individuals from many different walks of life—from adolescents to older adults, across Australia and South-East Asia—both in schools and organisations, where I've enjoyed being a leader and mentor, helping others grow and thrive.

My genuine, warm, and down-to-earth approach helps create a safe and non-judgemental space where you feel heard, supported, and safe to explore whatever you’re going through.

My Approach

My approach is focused on empowerment and self-discovery because I believe real change happens when you feel heard, supported, and understood.

Oak Counselling’s motto, your story, your journey, your growth, reflects the deeply personal nature of therapy. It is about honoring your unique experiences (your story), supporting you as you navigate life’s challenges (your journey), and helping you grow and thrive (your growth).

Counselling isn’t a one-size-fits-all process—it's about finding what works best for you. My approach is person-centred, which means I’ll always meet you with empathy, respect, and without judgement.

I also draw on strength-based and evidence-based practices, tailored to your needs. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, stress, self-doubt, or simply want to better understand yourself, I’ll help you reconnect with your inner strengths and values, build awareness, and develop tools for lasting wellbeing.

“We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.”

My Specialist Areas

I specialise in supporting individuals through a variety of challenges. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed by school, work, or personal struggles, I’m here to help you find your way forward.

I work with people of all ages—from teens dealing with school stress or relationship challenges, to adults navigating career pressures, family dynamics, and life transitions, to older adults facing retirement or changes in health.

My approach is about meeting you where you are, focusing on your strengths, and helping you find practical ways to cope and move forward in a way that feels right for you.

  • If you’re feeling stressed about exams, assignments, or just trying to keep up with everything, you don’t have to do it alone. Academic pressure can really build up and start to affect your focus, motivation, and overall wellbeing. In counselling, we can work together to unpack what’s getting in the way—whether it’s time management, study habits, or anxiety—and find practical strategies that work for you. My goal is to help you feel more in control, reduce stress, and approach your studies with greater confidence and clarity.

  • ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can make everyday tasks feel a bit more challenging, especially when it comes to focusing, staying organized, or managing energy levels. It affects people of all ages and can show up in different areas of life, such as school, work, or relationships. In our counselling sessions, we’ll work together to better understand how ADHD shows up for you. I’ll support you in building on your strengths, exploring practical strategies, and finding ways to feel more in control and confident in your day-to-day life.

  • Life transitions such as starting a new job, moving to a new place, starting a family, or going through a personal change, can leave you feeling uncertain or disconnected from your sense of self. It’s completely normal to feel off-balance during these times. In counselling, we’ll explore your emotions, identify your strengths, and work on building a positive mindset to help you adjust. I’ll support you in developing coping strategies that can help you navigate the change with confidence and move forward in a way that aligns with who you are.

  • Anxiety and depression are common mental health conditions that can significantly impact a person’s wellbeing. Depression often brings about feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness, while anxiety involves worry, nervousness, and fear. Anxiety can occur alongside depression, and some people experience both conditions simultaneously. In our sessions, we’ll gently explore what you’re going through and find ways to help you feel more grounded and supported. Counselling can help you better understand your thoughts and emotions, develop practical coping tools, and build a stronger sense of self-awareness and acceptance.

  • If you're struggling to set boundaries or assert yourself, it can often feel like you're sacrificing your needs to please others, which can leave you feeling drained or overwhelmed. In counselling, we’ll focus on understanding why healthy boundaries are so important for your wellbeing. I’ll help you build your self-esteem and teach you how to communicate your boundaries clearly, without guilt or fear. Together, we’ll work on building the tools and confidence you need to navigate challenging situations while protecting your emotional health.

  • Grief and loss can take many forms—whether it’s the death of someone close to you, the end of a relationship, losing your health, job, or even a sense of identity or future you’d hoped for. These kinds of changes can leave you feeling lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to move forward. In grief and loss counselling, we’ll take the time to gently explore your experience at your pace. Together, we’ll work toward making sense of your emotions, honouring what you’ve lost, and finding a way to adjust to your new reality with compassion and hope.

  • Whether you're having challenges with a partner, a family member, or a colleague, improving communication can make a big difference in how you connect and work together. In counselling, we can explore what’s behind any tension, how different perspectives might be influencing the situation, and identify any behaviours that might be getting in the way of healthy relationships. Together, we’ll focus on building your communication skills, helping you better understand your own thoughts and feelings, so you can create stronger, more positive connections with those around you.

  • If you’re dealing with bullying or feeling overwhelmed by school, it can really take a toll on your self-esteem and confidence. You might feel isolated or anxious, but you don’t have to face it alone. In counselling, we’ll work together to help you rebuild your self-worth by focusing on your strengths, resilience, and positive qualities. I’ll support you in learning coping strategies that help you handle tough situations with confidence and teach you how to navigate challenges in a way that protects your emotional wellbeing.

  • If you’re struggling with low self-esteem or self-doubt, it can feel like you’re constantly second-guessing yourself or not feeling ‘good enough.’ These thoughts can really hold you back from living the life you want. In counselling, we’ll gently explore where those beliefs come from and start to challenge the negative self-talk that fuels them. Together, we’ll focus on your strengths, your resilience, and the parts of your story that deserve to be seen in a more compassionate light, helping you build a stronger, more confident sense of self.

  • If you're feeling overwhelmed, constantly drained, or like you're running on empty—whether it's because of work, life demands, or both—you might be experiencing stress or burnout. These feelings can creep in slowly or hit all at once, showing up as exhaustion, irritability, sleep issues, or even a sense of dread about facing the day. In counselling, we’ll work together to understand what’s going on beneath the surface and look at ways to lighten the load. I’ll support you in developing healthier thinking patterns, managing emotions, and creating strategies that help you feel more balanced, resilient, and connected to what matters most.

  • If you’ve been through something that felt overwhelming, frightening, or deeply distressing, you might be carrying the emotional weight of that experience, sometimes without even realising it. Trauma can show up in many ways, affecting how you feel, think, and relate to the world around you. In our counselling sessions, we’ll work together to create a safe and supportive space where you can begin to make sense of what’s happened. I’ll help you find ways to manage distressing memories and emotions, rebuild a sense of safety, and move forward at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Workplace challenges, such as stress, conflict, feeling undervalued, or struggling to maintain balance, can significantly impact your mental health. If you're finding it difficult to cope, you’re not alone. Counselling offers a space to talk things through and explore what’s contributing to the pressure. Together, we can find practical strategies to help you manage more effectively, improve your wellbeing, and protect your mental health in the long run.
